Murcia Festivals Make Spanish Holiday Villas Magnificent
A Spanish holiday at a luxury resort or villa has much to offer a traveler. Combine beautiful beaches, great food and good old-fashioned rest and relaxation with culture and you have the makings of a great vacation. Murcia offers all that to those who choose to visit the resorts of La Manga.
Festivals in Murcia are year-round. Pick a month and there is sure to be some type of festival to suit your needs. A well-known musical event is the Las Minas Flamenco Song Festival. This festival takes place in the mining town of La Union in July. The harbor town of Cartagena holds the La Mar de Musicas Festival every summer.
The International Festival de Mediterranean Folklore takes place over three days every September. This event brings many groups from all over the world to the region to celebrate its culture. They play music, spotlight traditions and perform dances to entertain and educate visitors to the festival.
Another wonderful festival is the International Festival of Theater, Music and Dance in Almansa. This festival features top performers from Spain and around the world. January brings La Fiesta de las Cuadrillas in Murcia. This festival celebrates the present-day culture of the Murcia region and highlights the music common to the area. Every February sees the town of Aguilas celebrate with carnivals that have a 200-year tradition. These carnivals combine costumes and disguises with lots of music. The month of March has Las Incursiones Berberiscas, which takes place in Los Alcazares in Mar Menor. This three-day festival has music, dancing, games and a medieval market.
The town of Lorca celebrates Holy Week every April with many colorful processions that give tourists a closer look at the area's religious traditions. Following the Holy Week processions are the Fiestas de Primavera. The month of May sees the town of Cieza in Murcia filled with crosses made from flowers for the Dia de la Cruz.
The period from June through December has the town of San Javier hosting many festivals. These include jazz, theater, music and dance. For even more variety, there are the celebrations of the Dia de los Santos in Calasparra. These have everything from open-air dances and floats to rice tasting and even a bull run.
In the town of Torre Pacheco, the Fiesta del Melon each July celebrates the cultivation of melons. In August, the small, quiet town of Aledo hosts festivals to commemorate its history. September sees Murcia giving its citizens and visitors the Feria de Murcia, a festival filled with concerts, bull runs and a very popular procession.

Mambo in New Zealand
Origin:
Mambo originated in Havana, Cuba in the 40s. The Mambo was originally played as a Rumba with an emphasis on 2 or 4. Once introduced, it fast led to other variations. Although Mambo did not last long and is only danced by advanced dancers today, it led to other styles that became popular such as Salsa and Cha-cha.
Music:
Mambo is an up-tempo dance rythm, usually around 200 bpm. Mambo, like Salsa is played in 4/4 with all 4 beats being evenly accented. Like a lot of Latin American rythms, percussion forms a very important part of the music.
Dance:
Mambo is probably one of the toughest dances to learn, especially is you are already used to dancing one of the other Latin styles like Salsa. Although the music is 4/4, the stepping is quite different. The steps are taken on the second beat as opposed to the first beat, which is one of the main differences that throw most dancers off. The other difference is that the weight change takes place three times in every four beats whereas only two steps are taken!

Why You Still Can't Play the Piano
You've spent good money on books. Workbooks, lesson books, other books on piano playing. But you still can't play the piano. Why not?
Two reasons. One, you lack motivation. That's understandable. After all, most lesson books require you to learn how to read music first, then play other people's music. Pretty uncreative if you ask me.
The second reason is you haven't learned how to use chords. Music, real music is created with chords as the foundation. In music there are 3 aspects; rhythm, melody, and harmony. Harmony is created with chords. Chords can give you melody and rhythm. Weird huh? But once you have chords under your eager fingers, you're not far off from making music.
Now that you know chords are foundational for your creative success at the piano, you're left with what to play, or what style to play in. Most people just want to learn how to play the classics. They want to learn how to read music so Bach, Beethoven and Mozart come to life through them. A noble goal but guess what? You're still playing other peoples music.. no matter how good it is.
Wouldn't it be great if you could create your own music? But how you're wondering. Very easily. By using chords! I'm a big fan of the New Age piano style. It's very impressionistic and attractive. Chords are used to create with and a complete beginner can begin improvising AND composing music literally within minutes! Fantastic sounds begin to appear and students are amazed what comes out of them.
Now they can truly play the piano. The creative juices flow as the warm sound of the piano floats in the air. Passerby's wonder where that sound is coming from. You smile as they pass as your gift of music gently descends upon their ears.

My delight in the modern day musical 'Once' can hardly be contained; it is an understated masterpiece. It is both beautiful and truthful - two of the highest compliments that can be bestowed upon a work of art.
In 'Once', director John Carney does not attempt to tackle the biggest challenges facing the modern world, instead, he explores the ability of art (in this case music) to bond, fulfill, and heal people. He also examines the personal dilemmas we face each day as he presents his characters with challenges, asking them to decide if they should pursue a passion, or accept responsibility; if they should give in to the temptation of the moment, or do what they know to be right. The personal choices, the poignant moments, and the amazing and heartfelt music are the things that make this little film a true gem.
The story told in 'Once' takes place in Dublin in just a week. It centers around two characters, the guy and the girl, who remain nameless throughout the film. The guy is a street musician who works in his fathers Hoover repair shop by day, and pours his heart out by night as he sings and plays his own songs. The girl is a young Czech immigrant, living with her mother and small daughter. She is a talented pianist, but supports her family by selling flowers and magazines in the street, an occupation which eventually leads her to the guy.
The two characters bond over music, and a friendship develops. The guy wants to cut a record, and the girl agrees to help him. Their relationship continues to grow and their past heartbreaks are explored through their music. You get to peek into the homes, and the family life of each character, a journey which is taken in such a natural way that at times, you feel as if you are watching a home movie.
The characters of the guy and girl are deep and complex, as is their relationship. The guy is lonely, and seems to have plenty of passion for his music, yet little drive to do what it takes to get his career off the ground. The girl is also, lonely, and yet very self sufficient. She never shirks her responsibilities, and has strength and a sense of purpose to her life. She definitely knows what she is about!
The relationship between the characters is interesting, as there is definitely romantic tension. They are both lonesome, and it must have been very tempting for Carney to turn their story into a romance. It also would have ruined the movie. The ability of the characters - especially the girl - to show restraint, and to be able to hold themselves accountable for what they know to be right, defines the characters, and also defines Carney as a director.
It is interesting to note that 'Once' seems to be a film destined for greatness, against all odds. For instance, the two main characters are played by musicians, not actors, and they are not in any way typical of glamorous leading characters. Much of 'Once' was filmed on a home camera, in the flats and offices of the cast. There is no sex, violence, special effects, or Hollywood moments that could be featured in the marketing campaign. Add all of this to the fact that the budget for 'Once' did not exceed $100,000, and most people would feel certain that this film would be an enormous flop. However, in the case of 'Once'... these things all contribute to make it the beauty that it is.
I will admit this is my favorite movie of 2007. When I originally saw it, I was so moved that I immediately got in line to buy a ticket for the next showing, along with the soundtrack. It may not be the most important movie of the year on a macro scale; 'Once' does not tackle any political or social justice issues, and it is certainly not the most cinematically impressive. But if you want to see a movie that will leave you inspired by a relationship, touched by the strength of the characters, awed by the music, and hopeful about life and our ability to connect with another human being, I cannot recommend 'Once' too highly.
