Spiritual Parenting - How to Affirm Your Child's Innate Sense of Truth

Spiritual Parenting helps your children to affirm their innate sense of truth.

The core of your child's being is his spirituality.

From here grows his sense of self esteem and the values and morals which bring his sense of belonging.

Spiritual Parenting allows you to nurture your child's spirituality by creating magic through dancing, music and nature, and through sharing feelings and imagination.

Music

Sing together often. Use music cd's, dvd's, instruments, pot lids, the sound of the wind, rain drumming on the roof, your voices, concerts, community events. Sing while you walk, bath, cook, clean and play. Make up songs, create nonsense rhymes and tunes, sing the words of favourite books instead of reading them.

Dance

Dance with your children often - through this glorious experience children learn about the joy of music and movement. Be a mirror to your child through your own sense of delighting in dance.

Imagination

Open your child up to beauty and wonder by endowing the daily routine with peace and magic. Reveal this through loving guidance, through imaginative play and through your words, actions, songs and joy.

Nature

Go out often into nature through the changing seasons. Let your child get wet in puddles, skip together instead of walking, stop often to notice a different smell, make sure that you yourself delight in the marvel of the great outdoors. Learn together the names of plants and trees and delight in each others knowledge. Set up a nature table at home where new discoveries can be invited and encouraged.

Feelings

Teach your children to name their feelings by acknowledging and naming your own. "I'm feeling sad right now. That makes me feel very happy. I feel upset. I feel surprised". "I feel" statements will encourage your children to come up with their own, thus creating a healthy and wholesome sense of self. Ask them often, "How does that make you feel?"

Listen to your child as well as talking with him. This validates not only his sense of self, but allows for the growth of his intuitive self. Really listen for what he is saying and show him that you hear.

Magic

Show your child that life is magical, enchanting, rich and astonishing by creating unexpected pockets of surprise for them. Spiritual parenting helps your child cope well with change in life by giving life a mystical quality instead of a fearful approach. This enables a sense of adventure.

Years later my two eldest children still talk about the time their father woke them up at midnight, and then took them in their pyjamas on a car ride to see the first lights on the village Christmas tree. By creating a magical adventure through his own infectious joy, their father gave them an opportunity to extend their own inner magic through his spiritual parenting approach.

Silence

Don't be afraid to teach them about the beauty of silence. Encourage your young children to enjoy undisturbed quiet moments in your company. Show them by enjoying moments of silence in their presence, sitting quietly with your eyes closed. Teach them the value of walking together without talking. This is how they learn to feel their own inner peace.

Cherishing

Cherish them with physical affection, with words of love, with little gifts of flowers, unusual finds in the garden, written notes and through reading, playing and singing together.

Give them your undivided time and attention when you are walking with them, encouraging them to talk about their day, their friends, their hopes and dreams and encourage, encourage, encourage.

Bedtime

Create bedtime rituals that focus on the special nature of each of your children. Settle them into sleep feeling nourished, cherished and special. Try telling them "I love you today because..." and add a new reason for every night. Spiritual parenting in this way is a calm, child centred approach.

I believe that being a consistent parent is both vitally important and totally necessary to ensure a happy family life. However, becoming a consistent parent is rather like trying to push water uphill if we are not consistent within our selves. This website addresses HOW to adopt a firm, clear, consistent parenting approach, while enabling you to enhance and increase your emotional well-being.

The Art Of Auditioning

I was reading an article on job interviewing skills. The author said a lot about first impressions, and that in just 4 seconds, a job applicant is sized up with regard to:

  • appearance,
  • intelligence,
  • poise,
  • ability to exude confidence and
  • willingness to contribute to a team effort.

So I started wondering about how those qualities might "fit" into an audition scenario.

In a job interview, the applicant may be given ample opportunity to demonstrate his talent and his potential asset to the company for which he/she is interviewing. The interview itself may be quite lengthy, cordial, friendly, even if the interviewer is not necessarily impressed and ends up tossing the resume into the trash once the applicant has left the office. All very civilized!

An audition, while containing some of the elements of a job interview, is very different! You get out onto the stage, you begin to sing, and in seconds, not minutes, the loud, bombastic sounds of THANK YOU! (pause) "NEXT?" come barreling up to the stage, stinging your ears and your pride as you slither away off the stage and out the door.

So what are the elements of a good audition? Upon listening to literally thousands of auditions, I have come up with what I believe to be the 4 basic essential elements:

Talent - Confidence - Musicianship - Authenticity

Let's take them one at a time.

TALENT

Naturally, if talent is not present and immediately recognized, the audition is a total bust and is terminated instantly! Let's assume that you do have talent and that it's sufficient to warrant this audition.

How do you SHOW your talent in the first 4 seconds?

1.Choose a song that you know blind. In other words, one that you are so sure of that you never have to worry about forgetting a lyric or whether or not you'll hit that high note.

2. Choose a song that you LOVE! It's so much easier to enjoy yourself when you sing a song you simply adore, and enjoying yourself is part of the "first impression" the judges are evaluating.

3. Choose a song that instantaneously demonstrates your range and vocal quality...even if you have to start in the middle of the song.

4.Let the song express YOU and nobody else, (in other words, do NOT imitate anyone).

CONFIDENCE

If you have prepared sufficiently, you should be able to exude confidence in spite of being nervous. Take a deep belly breath before stepping onto the stage and tell yourself that you are wonderful and will do great!
Lack of confidence is easy to recognize almost immediately, so the preparation, that is, learning your words and making them your own is vital! Those of us who hold auditions regularly are fully aware of the "butterflies" syndrome and will make allowances for a performer IF the singer has obviously taken the time to prepare his/her performance. Don't posture! Just Be yourself!

MUSICIANSHIP

As is the case with "American Idol", many auditions are held "a cappella", which is without a musical accompaniment. If you cannot hold the tune without hearing it played for you, then please...DON'T AUDITION! Get some ear training before you embarrass yourself by not being able to stay on pitch.

AUTHENTICITY

A genuine inner quality that shines through a performance gets immediate attention. I don't know how many auditions I have listened to where the singer was obviously trying to impress me rather than just being REAL. An artificial performance can really turn me off...where every note and body movement is so meticulously choreographed that there is no connection to the lyrics and a total absence of spontaneity and vitality in the performance.

One of the things I emphasize heavily and regularly in my practice is the need for a singer to truly KNOW who he/she is in order to demonstrate genuineness to an audience.

It takes courage to be YOU, but that is why we perform: to be who we are, warts and all, through our music. And it is this quality that most will instantly CONNECT with the one listening, whether it be a director, producer, or someone in the audience.

Notice, I did not mention having an excellent voice as one of the key elements. That is because if your voice is not up to par, you should hold off participating in auditions until your voice is further developed.

I wonder about those singers who tried our for "American Idol" last fall, who were totally humiliated and made fun of, first by the judges, and then by the network producers, who continued to air the most awful auditions weeks into the season. Why on earth would a person put him/herself through that? Get your voice into shape before you audition - for anything!

Finally, although it may appear to some folks at times that in America, we as a culture seem to celebrate mediocrity, for those of us who see art as the salvation of humanity, the only thing that can cut through the cynicism and go straight to the heart, performing a song is not just a way to get one's 15 minutes of fame on TV. Being an artist is a personal responsibility...to uplift, inspire, and cause an otherwise cynical fellow to stand up and say, "WOW...that moved me!"

Art, Music and Literature Based Communities

What drives people? Some may say inspiration, our ambitions and needs; this is not very far from saying that people are driven by the inspiration provided by art and music as well as by the need to quench our literary thirst. For most people reading a book, watching a movie or listening to their favorite music isn't enough of an experience, the most important part is to interact and get validation from people with the same interests about our point of views and opinions.

It is often said that every individual is different, this remains true in many aspects however when it comes to topics such as Art, music and literature we all have something in common, our tastes as far as music may concur with someone else's but our interests in literature could differ. Validation and the exchange of ideas is what makes the web so popular, every site built provides ideas which are meant to be validated by people, without this basic interaction the entire concept of the web is defeated.

People interested in art, music literature, etc. have taken advantage of the web to create communities focused on sharing their thoughts regarding these topics, for instance some may consider "Five for Fighting - 100 years" as much as a piece of musical art as "Pachebel's - Canon", some may definitively disagree as both pieces belong to different genres, one has vocals the other is solely instrumental; small differences in the perception of art is what triggers reactions on which entire communities come together and share their ideas regarding the topic being discussed.

The same can be said of literature, for some Romeo and Juliet is without a doubt one of the most beautiful pieces of romantic literature ever written, however the language used may not have the same effect in contemporary readers as it won't convey the emotions it did back then; so it is to say that the power of such piece has diluted through time. In order to recreate such excellent work actors and writers come together and work in such play, however what matters is how people perceive their work and how emotions are conveyed through professional acting, again small differences trigger a sea of reviews and opinions which is better expressed in online interactions.

For most of us free speech is the ultimate work of art, as it allows us to express our thoughts through any medium without worrying of censorship, taking advantage of the tools and resources available to express our thoughts is without a doubt the most precious right.

MorbidBeauties.com provides access to an entire community of individuals whose interests revolve around gothic culture. Interact with people interested in art at the gothic forum, visit us today and create a gothic profile!

Don't Let Playing Piano In Front Of An Audience Intimidate You

I remember very well the first time I ever played piano in front of what seemed like a large audience. In reality, it was probably a fairly small audience, but I was nervous regardless, as I was just a young kid. My time on stage that day didn't really last very long, but it seemed like an eternity. I wasn't sure if I would even be able to complete my so-called performance. I wasn't sure exactly why I was nervous, because I knew I had practiced and was perfectly capable of playing the piano music that I had planned on playing.

After the performance I commented to my mother about how nervous I had been during the performance and I told her I didn't know why. Of course she told me I played the piano fine and that I didn't appear to be nervous. I knew otherwise. I realized later that my problem was that I felt self-conscious the whole time I was in front of that audience. I was concerned about what I looked like up there, what the music sounded like to the audience, what the audience and even my mom was thinking about my piano playing, and probably any other number of things that raced through my mind while I was playing piano on stage. I simply couldn't relax and enjoy the time.

How should I go about correcting this problem of being self-concious while playing the piano? For an overwhelming majority of people, performing in public in front of an audience can be a very frightening experience, but it shouldn't be. The idea is to keep playing, and eventually your confidence will grow and you won't have that fear when you perform. Some people just feel more confident playing the piano in front of an audience than other people do, and that's fine. There is nothing wrong with being nervous at all.

I think one of the best ways to overcome this is to just start playing piano in front of small audiences, even if only one or two people, and gradually work your way up to playing the piano in front of larger crowds. If you can play piano in front of just one person, then you can play piano for any large number of people too! You just have to realize that a large crowd is simply a group of smaller crowds and individuals. Rather than beginning your piano performing career in front of large crowds, where it's only natural to be a bit nervous, you should start by playing in front of small groups and you won't have to experience that fear nearly as much, and your confidence will grow without you hardly even noticing it. That confidence will show through when you start playing piano in larger venues for bigger audiences.

The Moonlight of Debussy's Clair de Lune

If asked to name a piano piece that is near-perfect, one noted example comes to mind for many people. That piece is Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy. Clair de Lune, the third and most famous movement of Debussy's Suite Bergamasque, has entranced listening ears for over century. It has been the inspiration for many dramatic film sequences, as well as the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" from Disney's Pinocchio.

The son of a china shop owner and a seamstress, Claude Debussy began to reveal his brilliance at the age of seven when he started learning the intricacies of the piano. He soon attracted the attention of Mme. de Fleurville, whose son-in-law, French poet Paul Verlaine, would help inspire the piece with one of his poems. Verlaine was also acquainted with Frederique Chopin, as he was one of Chopin's pupils.

Debussy began his proper musical studies at the illustrious Paris Conservatory at the age of eleven. He spent twelve years studying under the giants of the age, stealing their secrets and arguing against the rigidity of the musical theory of the day. Debussy favored dissonance, which was a thorn in the side of his more strictly harmonious teachers. His love of experimentation, however, proved to be his greatest musical asset.

Early works by Debussy were heavily influenced by both his love of Richard Wagner's operas and his general distaste for the operas of Italian luminaries such as Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi, who was one of the reigning kings of the style. Though Wagner had been dead for several years before Debussy discovered his works, a cult had grown up around his music.

Wagner's influence was not to last, though, as Debussy's pieces tended to be more introverted than the extravagant Wagnerian sounds. He wrote his Suite Bergamasque, containing Clair de Lune, in his late 20s. As a sublime example of Debussy's sensual, quiet style, Clair de Lune may be perhaps his most lasting gift to the music world.

This lustrous piece was inspired, as were his earlier pieces, by one of his friend Verlaine's poems. Verlaine's poem "Clair de Lune" contains a reference to a bergamask, a clumsy dance performed by the natives of Bergamo. The French spelling of bergamask gives the entire suite its memorable name. The name "Clair de Lune," literally translated as "moonlight," is a perfect name, since the piece gives distinct images of moonlight with its rolling notes and glorious harmonies.

Played properly, Clair de Lune requires a technical mastery of sweeping left hand movements and modulations in intensity to reach its timeless quality of melodic and counter-melodic beauty. While the piece is played mostly pianissimo, its brief journeys into louder dynamic ranges present a need for a highly-developed knowledge of the keyboard. This, combined with the ability to re-interpret the feel of the music according to one's own personality, makes Clair de Lune music that has stood the test of time. It is a piece that is constantly evolving, living and breathing in the fingers of pianists the world over.

Music Review of Imagination to Inspiration by Richard Mekdeci

I met Richard Mekdeci, the heart and soul of Itoi Music, at the recent (August 2007) IONS (Institute of Noetic Sciences) Conference. In addition to Richard's considerable talents as an inspirational singer-songwriter and musician, Richard is a co-founder of I to i Ministries,, a non-profit dedicated to bringing positive spiritual music to people of all faith traditions. Part of what I to i Ministries and Richard have created is an opportunity to vote on your favorite songs, which can be accomplished online.

Their latest compilation CD, Imagination to Inspiration, is a truly wonder-filled chalice of heart-opening songs. Focused on the Global New Thought community, which includes Religious Science, Unity and affiliated churches, Imagination to Inspiration showcases 19 tracks by 18 different musicians. Every song features inspiring lyrics that invite us to co-create a world where everyone, everywhere feels safe, loved and celebrated. Having listened to this fabulous collection perhaps a dozen times, I can say that I have yet to get all the way through it without, sooner or later, tears of joy and thanksgiving streaming down my face.

Just a couple of my favorite songs on Imagination to Inspiration include the piano-based, county-tinged "Real Men Cry," by Karen Taylor Good. Giving men permission to feel their feelings is a passion of mine, and I love what Karen did with this track. "Do All You Can," by Devotion, is a delightfully intoxicating call to "be the change you wish to see."

Richard and I to i are performing miracles with truly inspired (in-spirited) music every day. Listening to this incredible collection is sure to put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Kudos to Richard and his amazing team for Being the Change!
