The Future is Unwritten-DVD Documentary

Julien Temple, one of the early documentarians of the London punk scene and director of the 2000 Sex Pistols film The Filth and the Fury, turns his attention now to that other seminal British band: The Clash--or more accurately, to the band's co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer, Joe Strummer. The Future is Unwritten is more than just a biography of Strummer; it is a tribute and exploration of a musician, artist and devoted humanist. Though Temple respects and admires Strummer (his influence is exalted by close friends, peers and fans like Bono and John Cusack), he doesn't romanticize this larger-than-life personality and presents Strummer honestly and not always in flattering light, though the director's fondness for his subject is constant. Most movingly, Strummer himself provides the narration via reassembled excerpts from a variety of interviews and the BBC radio show he hosted during the nineties. In the wrong hands, this could be contrived, but in this masterful documentary it serves as a testament to not just Joe Strummer the myth, but Joe Strummer the man, telling us his story in vivid detail. The Future is Unwritten is a moving and personal portrait of a musician who helped shaped not just punk, but modern music as a whole. --Kira Canny
Customer Review: Amazing movie about a rock legend
There have been several movies made about Joe Strummer but Julien Temple's is unique in its personal touch. Temple was a friend of Strummer's for many years and so had insight into the man behind the music that many people did not have. The movie consists of Joe's life story as told by many friends, acquaintances, fellow artists and others who knew him or were influenced by him over the years. Amazing music, very well put-together, and just a great story about a man who was a huge influence on rock & roll and politics during his time on this earth. Joe was taken from the world too early when he died unexpectedly in December 2002 and after watching this movie one can only wonder what more he would have accomplished. The opening scene of Joe singing "White Riot" a capella in the studio is complemented by the closing scene of Joe and Mick Jones reuniting on stage 20+ years later to perform the same song...even though they were old (and Mick a little bald!) they still ROCKED. If you like the Clash, you must see this movie!!

Buena Vista Social Club

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright
Customer Review: Essential for any music collection
I am a fan of many types of music including jazz, rock, dance, blues, bluegrass, classical, world, etc. This is easily one of the top 5 albums ever created, regardless of genre. It is a magical culmination of music, musicians, and timing. If you listen to this (no really, close your eyes and really listen) and are not moved by it, you had better check to see that you still have a heartbeat!
Customer Review: Modern classic
I don't consider my house a home without this album. I seriously put it on repeat. It's one of my favorite to cook and clean to and just leave in the stereo when guests arrive. The DVD of the making of this CD provides a valuable context to what these musicians had been through and make the experience of the album that much more potent for me--I'd recommend the DVD, as well. Ry Cooder does a great job with both.

Music makes the world go round and people would lead monotonous lives were it not for this great gift. Music does not need to be dissected and comprehended to be appreciated. It simply carries people off in rhythm and melody to a land where the imagination rules and the laws of this world are no longer applicable.

Music can be enjoyed in many forms. Some people choose to sing, others choose to play an instrument, and yet others bring all other forms of music together to entertain a crowd. The last category is at times, referred to as disc jockeys or DJs for short and their job is perhaps the toughest of the lot. Not only do they require a deep understanding of music and its various forms, but they also need to be aware of the popular demand. A DJ's job is highly technical. There is a large variety of sensitive electronic equipment that DJs must learn to handle efficiently if they are to be successful. These machines are generally very expensive and new models come out every day so what was state-of-the-art yesterday becomes quite redundant in a week's time. DJs have to be savvy about the latest offerings on the market and know the best prices for all these products.

Basic single turntables for beginners start at about $100 and with increase in professional level, quality and size, the price can go up to a thousand dollars. CD players are generally more expensive although they are available at every electronic store. The average price can range between $200 and $2000 depending upon output and features. Mixers again vary in quality and utility. Professional that cater to a large crowds need advanced models which can cost as much as $2500 whereas amateurs just getting their feet wet can make do with cheap ones worth about $100. Accessories such as lighting, fog machine, and studio equipment are necessary only when people wish to stick to DJing as a life-long profession. Even then, such investment should be made only when people are certain of their positions in the music industry. If all this seems too expensive, people could start off with computer programs and downloads and work their way up to professional equipment.

All that matters is your child's experience at the piano. It doesn't matter what other people think, what others expect, even what the piano teacher thinks is irrelevant.

What matters is that your child has a chance to experience playing the piano, however humbly, and enjoys what they are able to do. Even attempting the piano is a success.

Looking at children at the piano as a group, with statistical expectations that one child will live up to someone's ideal of a musician, is actually destructive to the child.

No one in their right mind expects their child to play at Carnegie Hall: what we're looking for is hobbyists and aficionados, not piano virtuosi and superstars.

Let me assure you that if your child has what it takes to play Carnegie Hall, it will be so obvious that no one in the piano business will miss their cue. The number of children that have that in the cards for them are so few, that it is not even a real number.

Take all the wildly talented children, divide by 10,000, and then pick one. That one child has a 1% chance of a successful career as a piano soloist. But all children, properly nurtured, have a 100% chance of playing simple songs at the piano, feeling great about it and adding to their general education and intellectual skills.

It's more productive to think in terms of your child as an individual. Let's get that individual child to play as well as they can, without stress, without wildly unrealistic expectations.

In fact, the point of early childhood music education is not expertise, but exposure to the intellectual and abstract concepts inherent in music that will help their minds grow.

To demonstrate the proposition that children's piano lessons increase mental powers, we need to look at the human brain itself.

The brain, divided into two sides, controls each hand with the opposite side of the brain. The left brain controls the right hand, while the right brain controls the left hand.

The two sides "speak" to each other via a huge superhighway of nerves and ganglia called the "corpus callosum." The reason the piano is so beneficial for children intellectually is that the piano, in having both hands work together in similar ways, forces the brain to use both halves of the brain simultaneously. There are very few activities on earth that excite the "corpus" like music and piano.

And so piano activity demonstrably produces better handwriting, better math skills, better abstract skills and higher self-esteem, all through having the two sides of the brain talk to each other, over and over until the nerve path is physically thickened.

That's right, there is a PHYSICAL result in your child's brain as a result of playing the piano, even attempting the piano. It is a known medical fact that the "corpus callosum" (that nerve path between the brain's two sides) of musicians is up to 90% larger than that of people who are not musicians. And starting piano at an early age begins those benefits early in life.

So if your child is not destined for Carnegie Hall, they may still be destined to enjoy, appreciate and create music. And have a thicker corpus callosum!

The saddest part of music education today is that piano lessons are, as they always have been, designed to produce candidates for Carnegie Hall, not fully rounded and nurtured individuals who try to play piano to the best of THEIR ability.

Children who, with a little care, could gain all the benefits of a piano education are made to feel like failures because they cannot live up to a curriculum developed hundreds of years ago to produce professionals.

It's time to let kids be kids and not rob them of the benefits of piano because they don't fit some misguided teacher's idea of accomplishment.

Start looking at the piano from the child's point of view.

Spiritual Parenting helps your children to affirm their innate sense of truth.

The core of your child's being is his spirituality.

From here grows his sense of self esteem and the values and morals which bring his sense of belonging.

Spiritual Parenting allows you to nurture your child's spirituality by creating magic through dancing, music and nature, and through sharing feelings and imagination.

Music

Sing together often. Use music cd's, dvd's, instruments, pot lids, the sound of the wind, rain drumming on the roof, your voices, concerts, community events. Sing while you walk, bath, cook, clean and play. Make up songs, create nonsense rhymes and tunes, sing the words of favourite books instead of reading them.

Dance

Dance with your children often - through this glorious experience children learn about the joy of music and movement. Be a mirror to your child through your own sense of delighting in dance.

Imagination

Open your child up to beauty and wonder by endowing the daily routine with peace and magic. Reveal this through loving guidance, through imaginative play and through your words, actions, songs and joy.

Nature

Go out often into nature through the changing seasons. Let your child get wet in puddles, skip together instead of walking, stop often to notice a different smell, make sure that you yourself delight in the marvel of the great outdoors. Learn together the names of plants and trees and delight in each others knowledge. Set up a nature table at home where new discoveries can be invited and encouraged.

Feelings

Teach your children to name their feelings by acknowledging and naming your own. "I'm feeling sad right now. That makes me feel very happy. I feel upset. I feel surprised". "I feel" statements will encourage your children to come up with their own, thus creating a healthy and wholesome sense of self. Ask them often, "How does that make you feel?"

Listen to your child as well as talking with him. This validates not only his sense of self, but allows for the growth of his intuitive self. Really listen for what he is saying and show him that you hear.

Magic

Show your child that life is magical, enchanting, rich and astonishing by creating unexpected pockets of surprise for them. Spiritual parenting helps your child cope well with change in life by giving life a mystical quality instead of a fearful approach. This enables a sense of adventure.

Years later my two eldest children still talk about the time their father woke them up at midnight, and then took them in their pyjamas on a car ride to see the first lights on the village Christmas tree. By creating a magical adventure through his own infectious joy, their father gave them an opportunity to extend their own inner magic through his spiritual parenting approach.

Silence

Don't be afraid to teach them about the beauty of silence. Encourage your young children to enjoy undisturbed quiet moments in your company. Show them by enjoying moments of silence in their presence, sitting quietly with your eyes closed. Teach them the value of walking together without talking. This is how they learn to feel their own inner peace.

Cherishing

Cherish them with physical affection, with words of love, with little gifts of flowers, unusual finds in the garden, written notes and through reading, playing and singing together.

Give them your undivided time and attention when you are walking with them, encouraging them to talk about their day, their friends, their hopes and dreams and encourage, encourage, encourage.

Bedtime

Create bedtime rituals that focus on the special nature of each of your children. Settle them into sleep feeling nourished, cherished and special. Try telling them "I love you today because..." and add a new reason for every night. Spiritual parenting in this way is a calm, child centred approach.

Remakes of some of the most popular Latin Pop hits have been compiled on an energetic two CD+Graphics set for karaoke fans to enjoy. Though it's geared for the teen set, grownups will undoubtedly join in when they hear these tunes and see accompanying lyrics for each track on their TV screens. I bought this for my 8 year old daughter, assuming that because it was geared towards kids, it would be appropriate. I was disappointed to see that these cds had a parental advisory: "Explicit lyrics" sticker on them. It did not say this in the product description. I will be returning this item.

Japanese Version featuring Two Bonus Tracks: 'careful Where You Stand' and 'for You'.
Customer Review: I have the excellent U.S. release and thought I'd put in my 2 cents.
Sure, if I don't own this, then I don't know about the *COMPLETE* packaging, but not many people are...well, not crazy, but...well, *FORTUNATE* enough to have 45 bucks, just laying around to spend on a release that offers *TWO* new songs. Call me crazy but... It's very, very mellow. Anyway, at first, none of the songs really stood out... But flash forward 7-8 months, and this is quite a nice, relaxing, and very, very soothing alternative CD. And Chris Martin's voice for the most part, fits right in! My favorite songs are: Don't Panic High Speed Sparks Trouble (nice piano) Everything's Not Lost I now own all 3 of Coldplay's albums. I think that this album is there very, very best, and they expanded their sound, to reach the masses with A Rush of Blood to the Head. It was nearly as good, but less unique than this CD. X&Y was most definitely the weakest link. But all of the CDs have at least 4 inspiring tracks on them. I really like the upbeat numbers that they do; Clocks, Daylight, Speed Of Sound, Fix You and Square One are amongst my favorites! This CD should be owned by most alternative music fans. As a MATTER OF FACT, do your friend a favor, and spread some love this Christmas by buying them this! They will love its mellow and ambient feel. It's in-describe-able!! Seriously. It's so lovely, that I'm at a BIG loss of words. I don't know if I've said this already, but when I initially purchased this from Best Buy for 13 bucks, and got it home, I was thinking, "This doesn't stand out much." But these days, it's definitely THE BEST alternative CD I own. It's perfection. You know they've found something special when the skit on the album perfectly blends into the next song. So if You've had a hard day at work, kick off your shoes and socks, turn the damn phone OFF, and pop this into your CD/DVD player. Smoke something nice, get a cappuccino, and just L-I-S-T-E-N. Most of all, R-E-L-A-X. I have no regrets buying this one. 5 stars.
Customer Review: "Parachutes" is only getting better with the years
It's been 4+ years since the original release of Coldplay's debut album in the UK (the US release would follow in Nov. 2000), and as the phenom called Coldplay is getting bigger and bigger, it's now clear that "Parachutes" is a classic, in every sense of the word. By now, the original 10 tracks of the album all have become so instantly familiar, yet never tiresome. There is of course "Yellow", the US break-through single but for me probably the weakest track on the set. Check out instead "Shiver", "Don't Panic" (with the immortal line "We Live in a Beautiful World"), "Trouble" and Sparks", 4 other singles from the album (all of them still available on Amazon). This import version of "Parachutes" (12 tracks, 50 min.) comes with 2 bonus tracks: "Careful Where You Stand" and "For You", which were actually the b-sides of the "Shiver" single, and which fit very well onto the album. So you can buy "Parachutes" the album and "Shiver" the single separately, or you can buy this import version which has everything in one place. Ypur choice. We now await Coldplay's new album, which supposedly will come out in Spring 2005. Who knows whether that's gonna be any good, but for sure it's gonna be a monster, and Coldplay is well on its way to be the next U2. Meanwhile, enjoy the humble and intimate debut album which I dare say Chris and the boys will never surpass.

Even the most successful businesses suffer from third-quarter blues. At times, results are easy to justify capital expenditures, seasonal market fluctuations or even act-of-nature catastrophes. Some companies may even spoil third quarter results to spare the triumphant fourth. Or, perhaps the dismal quarter is part of a wider business strategy that shareholders and analysts understand and support. At other times, the alarming red ink is a real wake-up call that leads to financial housekeeping, an executive sweep or a fiscal crisis plan.

But often, its not the results that are at fault, but the planning method that generates them. A business is not entirely unlike an individual when it makes short-term decisions that are not in alignment with the core values of the company the end result is nearly always disappointing.

Lets face it. Business leaders are under pressure to produce results now. They can easily bend to the will of investors and boards, who want quick returns and payoffsquick indicators of success. All too often, a leaders long-term vision for company growth and achievement is sacrificed to the demands of quarterly reports or the profit and loss statement. And that sacrifice leads to bad decisions that compromise the underpinning values of the organization and unsurprisingly, can shipwreck quarterly earnings and maroon long-term gains.

So how does a business leader set the right goals?

According to veteran entrepreneur Peter H. Thomas, youand your companyshould dance your way to success through mutual goals that are adopted step by step and always in alignment with your values. In Thomas blueprint for success, he suggests the RUMBA, a goal-setting process that determines worthwhile objectives in terms of:

--> Realistic

--> Understandable

--> Meaningful & Measurable

--> Believable; and,

--> Agreed upon.

To stage the process, and bring it into focus and vision, business leaders focus on the following questions:

  • Are our goals realistic? Are they grounded in clear ideas of what we want and whats required to achieve them?
  • Are we willing to take risks, and if so, whats our risk quotient?
  • Are the goals understandable? Are the objectives clearly defined?
  • Are the goals personally meaningful to our company and its stakeholders? Are they measurable with objective indicators?
  • Do we believe wholeheartedly in the short-term objectives and the long-term goal we expect to achieve?
  • Are the goals and objectives agreed upon by the people who have stake in our company?
  • Even then, while the focus and balance needed to be a leader may give a company stability and trajectory, company goals that dont align with company values will always be a threat to future growth.

    As Plato said in the text Alcibiades, Know Thyself. As a business leader, youre charged with the task of holding a vision for the company, and maintaining the appropriate perspective to achieve it. Dont let unaligned interests cloud your sight. A well-focused leader who sets goals using criteria consistent with personal and corporate values will achieve over the long haul.

    Quarterly results dont have to be dreaded, or be a catalyst for financial housekeeping or maybe the executive sweep. When goals are in step with stakeholder expectations and aligned with core values, its all easya piece of cake, says Thomas.

    Moreover, dancing with a goal-setting strategyand aligning it on a values-driven courseoffer benefits beyond the achievement of the goals themselves. These methods combined are a surefire way to motivate and inspire others, develop clarity and will boost the energy and confidence needed among colleagues and customers to reach even the tallest company peak.
